Italy Launches €8 Million Grant Program to Support Sustainable Road Freight

On June 20, 2025, the Italian government announced a new €8 million grant program aimed at accelerating the modernization and decarbonization of the country’s road freight transport sector. This initiative provides financial support to companies purchasing electric, hybrid, and LNG-powered trucks.

The program encourages the replacement of older, more polluting vehicles with cleaner alternatives, offering increased incentives for companies that scrap an old truck when acquiring a new one.

By promoting greener technologies, Italy aims to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and boost energy efficiency within its logistics industry.

This funding is part of Italy’s broader commitment to meet European Union climate goals and foster sustainable mobility across all transport modes. Eligible road freight companies can apply for the grants starting May 5, 2025, through an online portal managed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. The grant program aims to incentivize road freight operators to transition towards environmentally friendly vehicles, contributing to Italy’s overall carbon reduction targets.

Greener Fleet, Brighter Future

By facilitating access to cleaner technology, the government expects to see a significant decrease in greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. Applicants must submit detailed documentation proving vehicle purchase agreements and, where applicable, evidence of scrapping older trucks. The approval process will prioritize companies demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and innovation in logistics.

Italy’s Road to Sustainable Transport

This initiative aligns with Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which dedicates substantial resources to green infrastructure and sustainable mobility. Industry experts predict that such investments will not only improve environmental outcomes but also stimulate economic growth and job creation in the logistics field.

To support applicants, the Ministry has set up a dedicated helpdesk to assist with the application procedure and answer any queries.

Investing in green fleet technologies requires strong public-private collaboration. I hope the government will also focus on supporting the necessary charging infrastructure. Reducing emissions in road freight is critical. This grant program is well-aligned with the EU’s decarbonization goals and should become a permanent feature. The grants will help smaller operators modernize their fleets. It’s a significant boost to Italy’s logistics competitiveness and a win for sustainability.

It’s a positive step, especially with the added scrappage option. However, the program must be extended for more companies to fully benefit.

This initiative is a very promising step toward a more sustainable logistics sector in Italy. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, the program sends a strong signal that the government is committed to supporting businesses in their green transition. However, for this effort to have a lasting impact, it’s crucial to look at the entire ecosystem — including training drivers to efficiently operate new vehicles.

This is a good incentive. If managed properly, it will encourage companies like ours to speed up the renewal of aging fleets and adopt hybrid and electric options sooner.
